Tipperary Station School

Can you find out the following:

How big is the station?

Where is it situated in Australia?

How many pupils on average attend the school?

List the facilities that these students have access to.

When was the station established?

This station sounds amazing! Mr Scharf wants to move there. 🙂

Math Journals

We have incorporated math journals into our weekly plan this year for the very first time. These math journals record student learning as they progress through the week.

I had first viewed this concept at Runde’s Room and absolutely loved the idea. The left side of the book is completed together as a class (we do) at the beginning of the concept. At the end of the concept instruction the students create a reflection page (you do) that shows their learning.

One area that the students look forward to each week is the proof section. They get the opportunity to show their learning with their very own designs. This is a perfect area for differentiation as it allows the students to show me exactly what they can do.

KidBlog – Parent Access

5SK have been developing their very own KidBlogs accounts over the last few weeks. We would like to share them with you.

Our KidBlogs are a place to showcase our class writing and a way for students to learn alongside classes from all over the world. We are currently working with a class in Livonia, Michigan.

Quadblogging in 2014

We have some very exciting news. 5S are about to participate in a global blogging activity. Yes, global. We have signed up for the 2014 Quadblogging Challenge.

Deputy Mitchell explaining the value of Quadblogging:

http://quadblogging.net

In this challenge we will work alongside 3 other classes:

Canon Peter Hall Primary – United Kingdom
St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary School – England
Kamehameha Schools – Hawaii

We look forward to starting our challenge in week 5.

Writing a Quality Comment

One very important blogging skill is writing a comment. Mrs Yollis and her students have created a fantastic video that identifies and explains the skills needed to write a quality comment.

http://yollisclassblog.blogspot.com.au/2011/08/learning-how-to-comment.html

These are the 5 steps from the video:
1. Compliment the writer in a specific way
2. Add new information
3. Make a connection
4. End with a question
5. Proofread

Miss Jordan and 4KJ (a fantastic Aussie blog) have further information on how to leave a comment:

The Split Strategy

In maths during week 3 we learnt all about the split strategy.

To use the split method you need to:

* ‘Split’ one, or both numbers, into parts that are easy to multiply.

e.g.  37 x 4 – split 37 into 30 & 7

* Multiply the parts – 30 x 4 + 7 x 4

* Add the results – 120 + 28

* Record your thinking

37 x 4
= 30 x 4 + 7 x 4
= 120 + 28
= 148

Ryan Cothran presents: The Break-apart strategy in multiplication

Stop the video at 2:30. The first section gives a very good description of how to split the numbers.

In the second half we can see a two by two multiplication problem. It is interesting to note that we complete our two by two multiplication problems in a different sequence here. We all end with the same answer, but there can sometimes be more than one way to solve a problem.

Dance Fever

We are very lucky to be participating in Dance Fever this term. The Dance Fever team will be at our school for all of Term 1. We have attended two lessons so far and the students and I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We are currently learning two dances. (Hip Hop and Jive)
