Pocket Money Challenge

This challenge was originally created by Mrs Bearden from http://20somethingkidsand1kookyteacher.com/ for her 5th grade class. I have slightly altered the information to include our currency.

I am trying to figure out how much money Riley has in his allowance and I need your help!

First of all, you need to know these things:

1. Riley earns $4.00 each week, which I pay him in $1 coins.

2. Each time he is paid, he separates his money between 4 jars: SAVE, SPEND, DONATE and INVEST.

3. The DONATE and INVEST jars only get added to, but he has taken money out of the SAVE and SPEND jars.

How much money does Riley have right now, if these statements are true? Be sure to show HOW you know, and use numbers and words to EXPLAIN your thinking. Represent your solution in a clear and concise way that makes sense to others.

1. Riley has been paid his $4.00 allowance every week since the first of the year. We pay him on Fridays.

2. He bought  a scooter that cost $4.00 from his SPEND jar and Lego with $10 from his SPEND  jar. He saved up for a video game for $15 from his SAVE jar. He owed me $2 from his SPEND jar for doing some work for him.

3. Riley likes to hunt around for change and has found three $2 coins, two 50c pieces and seven 10c pieces. These were added to his spend jar.

Extras:

1. How many $1 coins does he have in each jar?

2. What if I paid him in 50c pieces? How many 50c pieces would he have in each jar? Altogether?

Currency Challenge

I have some very exciting news 5SK. Mrs Bearden and her class have accepted our currency challenge. They are currently working on their responses and will post soon. Keep an eye on their blog over the weekend.
