Pocket Money Challenge

This challenge was originally created by Mrs Bearden from http://20somethingkidsand1kookyteacher.com/ for her 5th grade class. I have slightly altered the information to include our currency.

I am trying to figure out how much money Riley has in his allowance and I need your help!

First of all, you need to know these things:

1. Riley earns $4.00 each week, which I pay him in $1 coins.

2. Each time he is paid, he separates his money between 4 jars: SAVE, SPEND, DONATE and INVEST.

3. The DONATE and INVEST jars only get added to, but he has taken money out of the SAVE and SPEND jars.

How much money does Riley have right now, if these statements are true? Be sure to show HOW you know, and use numbers and words to EXPLAIN your thinking. Represent your solution in a clear and concise way that makes sense to others.

1. Riley has been paid his $4.00 allowance every week since the first of the year. We pay him on Fridays.

2. He bought  a scooter that cost $4.00 from his SPEND jar and Lego with $10 from his SPEND  jar. He saved up for a video game for $15 from his SAVE jar. He owed me $2 from his SPEND jar for doing some work for him.

3. Riley likes to hunt around for change and has found three $2 coins, two 50c pieces and seven 10c pieces. These were added to his spend jar.

Extras:

1. How many $1 coins does he have in each jar?

2. What if I paid him in 50c pieces? How many 50c pieces would he have in each jar? Altogether?

Currency Challenge

I have some very exciting news 5SK. Mrs Bearden and her class have accepted our currency challenge. They are currently working on their responses and will post soon. Keep an eye on their blog over the weekend.

IPAD

I just learnt a new skill for the IPAD. Very exciting. Do you need a screenshot of what you have been working on in class? Press the home button and the power button at the same time. The image will be sent to your photos.

American Currency

5SK has been working through a booklet called ‘Daily Maths Review’. It is very similar to the Excel books as it has a wide variety of math questions that are completed in a short period of time. We have really enjoyed completing the tasks each day as they are quick and fun.

One area that we have trouble with is the currency. As it is an American book the money is different to ours. We are able to add up the notes as we can see the value easily. The coins are a bit tricky as they are not as easy to distinguish.

I have sent out an email to Mrs Bearden and her class in America to see if they can assist us with our learning.

Word Study

Today we added the word pillar to our ‘Interesting Word Chart’ . The students discovered that it means a long, thin upright structure that supports a building.

Writing Conclusions

The last paragraph of a piece of writing summarises your main point. It wraps up the writing and gives the reader something to think about. We have been teaching our students strategies that make their conclusions strong. Below is a joint construction created by 5SK today.

Green – Topic sentence

Blue – Summary of arguments

Yellow – Call to action/provide a solution/make a prediction (one of these)

Spiders are extremely dangerous compared to snakes. They are far more common,  more likely to be seen at night and their bites send thousands of people to hospital each year. Would you like to feel the excruciating bite of a vicious venomous spider? Look out before it is too late!

Op Art

We have been inspired by the op art at  Fru Billedkunst’s art blog. http://www.frubilledkunst.blogspot.dk/search/label/Op%20art

This site is absolutely amazing and full of beautiful art pieces.  Here are a few of our pieces so far.
